mcshep_match and cliche bingo, a.k.a. fandom = <3

I've been having fun over the past week reading all of the fabulous drabbles being posted at the [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match Drabble Challenge, and I've even managed to sneak in some writing in between rounds of bar study flashcards. If you're in a drabble-y mood, definitely check it out! And you can be a mercenary drabbler for either team -- competition's neck and neck right now, so I'll nudge you gently in the direction of writing for Team Peace, but with 350+ drabbles already, both teams have made an excellent showing!

(Oh, oh, and check out the gorgeous Team Peace icon [livejournal.com profile] monanotlisa made! You can see the gorgeous full-size banner of the image here at her journal.)

Also, because you needed another bingo card post on your flist:

This is definitely giving me some (vague) ideas! I'm not really sure what the "beauty" prompt is (or is that just fic where someone is ~startlingly beautiful~?), and I'll want to go look over the full list of prompts to see what I might use in that wild card square, but on the whole: this is going to be fun! Once I'm done with the bar and can have a life again, I mean.

Duuuuude, I got "courtship rituals" on my bingo card!! I can use my tips from our favourite stalker!anthropologist again! :D

Also, pfft, you are totally on the wrong [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match team. It's all about Team War! *\o/*

[identity profile] propinquitine.livejournal.com 2009-06-24 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, man, courtship rituals! That's awesome! I think I might be well on my way to stealing [livejournal.com profile] fish_echo's "sleeping arrangements" square (though, hmm, "imprisonment" might work for that), but I've got my eye on your courtship rituals, too. :D

And, wait, what, did I miss you signing onto a [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match team?!

[identity profile] winkingstar.livejournal.com 2009-06-24 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I did kind of flood you with emails of Dr. Givens's advice, didn't I? You're as much an expert as I am! ;)

Nooo, I am not officially affiliated. I was sorely tempted, but I will be in GERMANY and such, so it wasn't really doable this year. But [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan is Team Captain for War and she says it's the best team. And [livejournal.com profile] sonadorita was dithering over signing up or not, so I said I'd be her sporadic cheerleader if she did, and she got on Team War, too.

But I know you and [livejournal.com profile] flyakate on Team Peace, so I guess I'm evenly split. Really, I am easily persuadable. I am just lucky no one's told me to jump off a bridge or something, 'cause I probably would (well, depending on who's asking).

Must go read awful teen lit now. *sigh*

[identity profile] winkingstar.livejournal.com 2009-06-25 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
pee ess: Would you like an html table version of your card for future linkage? I just converted [mine] and would be happy to make up the code for yours, if you want. :)

[identity profile] propinquitine.livejournal.com 2009-06-27 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, oooh, if you have the time, yes please! Might give me some incentive to start writing, so I can fiddle with HTML to figure out how to check off a box. :-) (Well, I've got plenty of incentive to be writing, but there's all this dang bar studying I'm supposed to be doing. Hmph!)

[identity profile] propinquitine.livejournal.com 2009-06-27 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I will definitely welcome any sporadic cheerleading you might offer, too! (I'm guessing you'll be mostly unavailable for betaing, what with it being the Summer of Many Travels?)

What's this awful teen lit you have to read? Is your teen lit class picking bad books?

[identity profile] winkingstar.livejournal.com 2009-06-30 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Umm, that was my attempt to read a Gossip Girl novel. But I gave up because I didn't really have time, so I used another awful novel I'd read recently instead. That one was called The Sound of Munich and is actually as bad as the title would lead you to believe. Worse, even! I picked it up because it's about a girl studying abroad in Munich. I was flipping through the first few pages, and they have her application for the study abroad program before the novel actually begins, and it's got name, age, hometown: SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA and I almost died of shock, except it all went downhill from there. EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER in the ENTIRE BOOK is a STEREOTYPE. Which, besides being lame, makes for incredibly boring reading.

And, yeah, I won't be reliable for beta-reading, sorry. But you can definitely have some sporadic cheer! *\o/*

..."sleeping arrangements" square (though, hmm, "imprisonment" might work for that)

And we now shall imprison* team SGA1 in this ambasatorial suite** and release you upon the dawning of the morn with an invitation to a sumptuous (and allergen-free) breakfast!

*turns out to have been a glitch in the 'Gate's translation software. The actual word in the local dialect translates to 'invite with great honour, pomp, and circumstance'. (Rodney didn't get along with these locals very well. But they mostly thought he was an idiot savant because he sputtered and waved his hands so much, thus they mostly patted him on his head--metaphorically-- and let him do whatever he wanted as long as someone else on his team was there as his minder)

**two bedrooms (equipped with two chests of drawers and one large bed each), one bath, one traditional lounge. Too bad for Sheppard's dignity-- nay, his virtue!-- that traditional lounges on this particular planet have slate mosaic floors, many small wooden stools and several small wooden end tables of various heights

Sadly, this is ever so believable in SGA fandom :)

Pardon me, I seem to have fic-outlined all over your comment. Ooops?

[identity profile] propinquitine.livejournal.com 2009-06-27 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Please continue to outline in comments at will! Poor John, he wouldn't get a very good night's sleep on that mosaic floor, would he? (And the bed -- it's full size! Like for a grown up! He's just not used to this kind of luxury.)

Of course I wanted to see your card! *pets your pretty card*

YOU GOT FOOD! I had forgotten that that was an option. I can write stories involving (and revolving around) food! I might have to steal that one for my Darth Vadar of the Caf square. (You can have my 'sleeping arrangements' to become 'supersleeping arrangement man' Hmmm, that doesn't work so well.)

My guess on the beauty prompt is that really it's anything to do with beauty. Things like really beautiful, really not-beautiful, beauty-in-the-eye-of-the-beholder, the extreme beauty of his forest-green orbs which make Mary Sue just fall in love with him, and so on and such all.

[identity profile] propinquitine.livejournal.com 2009-06-24 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I will totally trade you food for sleeping arrangements! (Sounds like we're starting some sort of barter economy, here.) I love seeing what pings other people as "hey, awesome!", because I wasn't all that interested in the food square, but now you've got me thinking.

"Anything to do with beauty" sounds about right, and I've also got the "physical imperfections" square, which could make for an interesting two-sides-of-the-same-story kind of back-and-forth, though of course they're not in line at all!

Yay, barter economy! (And don't dis your ability to write food-related stories, missy-photo-documenter!)

but now you've got me thinking.
And this is why I love the interactive nature of journaling sites for fandom. We get to have thinky conversations!

Oooh, does sound interesting! I'm comforting myself with the idea that it is not forbidden to continue to write things for these prompts after August end. And if you get really ambitious, there's always the 'double-line' option :)

[identity profile] propinquitine.livejournal.com 2009-06-27 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, it'll definitely be fun to keep working away at these after August! I might set myself the goal of doing a blackout within a year (definitely not by the time the challenge is up! Ha!), just to have something I can always be working on.
