I had to throw that bit about the blacksmith in there, because seriously, if the community had a regular "compete to get to kiss the people who came through the gate" ritual, you know that everyone would be a) scoping out the newcomers and b) signing right up to compete the minute John (or really, any of the team) stepped through. :-)
