Maine joins the Awesome Club for States That Are Awesome!

Equality is sweeping the northeast! Maine's legislature just passed a marriage equality bill, and the governor, who had previously spoken out against same sex marriage, quickly signed it into law.

Quoth the Governor:

In the past, I opposed gay marriage while supporting the idea of civil unions. I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage. . . . This new law does not force any religion to recognize a marriage that falls outside of its beliefs. It does not require the church to perform any ceremony with which it disagrees. Instead, it reaffirms the separation of Church and State. It guarantees that Maine citizens will be treated equally under Maine’s civil marriage laws, and that is the responsibility of government.

YES. Way to get it, Gov. Baldacci! A+ in Rethinking Your Assumptions! <3 <3 <3

We now return you to your regularly scheduled "Aaaaahhhhh law school graduation in 19 days aaaaahhhhh" panic/silence.

This semester has been not-so-awesome wrt free time and such-like, but super-awesome wrt gay rights. \o/ The northeast (+Iowa) must be twitter-pated or something. ♥

Of course, as I told [livejournal.com profile] dogeared, the loonies will point to this as evidence that gayness is contagious. :D

Oooh, and in the time it's taken me to reply, NH caught the fever, too! Next stop: NJ or NY, I hope!

I hadn't managed to hear that (not sure how I managed that, but I blame being busy) so *rah!* to Maine's Governor! And thanks for pointing it out with the imminent graduation!

And I'll blame being busy for taking so long to reply to your comment, dear! But yes, Maine was awesome, and now New Hampshire's joined the club, too! And graduation went relatively smoothly, so things are fairly great in my little corner of the world. I hope you've been well!
